Maximum Refunds NOT Guaranteed

Accountant Kansas City

I know what you’re thinking. What kind of pitch is that, Horowitz? It’s probably not one you’ve heard from many accountants in Kansas City. Or anywhere else, for that matter.

I’ll give you that, but hear me out.

If your search for a Kansas City CPA is driven primarily or solely by whomever promises you’ll pay the lowest taxes or get the biggest tax refund, then we’re probably not the best fit for you. We can’t promise that, and the truth is anyone who does is probably a charlatan. You shouldn’t trust anyone who sells you their tax services with all the subtlety of a prosperity televangelist.

So what’s wrong with promising the maximum tax refund?

I’m glad you asked. Here’s the thing: there’s no way an honest CPA could in good conscience make such a claim, because the ultimate story of your taxes is nuanced, and specific to your personal situation.

The amount of tax refund you are entitled to is the result of a complex equation, which the tax return exists to solve. There are lots of components to it, but it all boils down to how much you should have paid during the year minus how much you did pay.

The tax preparer has nothing to do with how much you should have paid or how much you did pay [unless they calculated estimated tax payments for you—in which case it was still up to you to make the payments.]

What would a good [read: honest] CPA offer instead?

A good CPA will commit to unflinchingly evaluate your financial story, and tell you the truth about it.

Wherever the tax rules give a choice of legitimate options, a good CPA will educate you about the options and steer you toward the one that puts you in the best situation. More than that, a good CPA will be a trusted advisor as you’re making business decisions in the first place so that next tax time, the truth will be flattering.

But whether it’s flattering or not, at tax time a good CPA will always take the side of the truth.

What good is the truth to you? And why does it matter so much when it comes to taxes?

The truth is the only version of things where you won’t ever have to keep your story straight.

The truth is the only version of things where the most unpleasant aspect of a tax audit would be a trip to the post office. The truth is the only version of things where you can truly rest your head on the pillow every night without worrying about when the sword of Damocles is going to fall and destroy your world. As someone famous once said, the truth will set you free!

What do we promise as your Kansas City accountant services?

We will thoroughly examine and portray every detail of your tax situation, every time.

Sometimes our thoroughness will uncover additional beneficial tax positions [translation: more money back!], but often it will not. Regardless of the final result, you will have peace of mind in knowing that when you engage our services, you will get “The Correct Amount of Money Back.”

I know. That doesn’t sound as sexy as “Maximum Refund—Guaranteed.” Because it isn’t sexy that way. And if we’re being honest, that’s a really good thing.

The truth is, “Maximum Refund” is the smooth-talking stranger in a bar who buys you fancy drinks and tells you whatever you want to hear. He smells nice and he’s pushing all the right buttons, but you know deep down that he’s not going to call you back after tonight.

“The Correct Amount of Money Back” is my brother-in-law, Ryan; he is clean and handsome in an understated way. He cooks well and cleans diligently, he is great with kids, he has a stable job, and he’s ready to commit.

If you’re looking for a “one-night stand” who will promise a temporary rush to your bank account, but who will leave your future less certain… Well, you’re welcome to use the services of “Max.” He’ll tell the government whatever it takes to fill up your bank account, but he’s not invested in your long-term well-being.

If you’re ready for a relationship that will hold you tenderly and also help you be your best self in the long run, then give us a call. We’re here, and we’re ready to commit.

Warm Regards,

Jacob
